All Wrapped Up in a Whistler Wonderland

Pack up your boots and boards and head for the mountain peaks of Whistler for a magical and merry Christmas. From adrenalin-fueled adventures to soul-soothing serenity, there’s something for everyone at this awesome and alluring alpine resort.

One of the planet’s premier skiing locations, Whistler is gearing up to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and offers almost every outdoor activity imaginable. Skiing, snowboarding, glacier riding, sledding—there are dozens of ways to swoosh down the slopes. But that’s not all, as there is ample opportunity for plenty of other activities. World-class boutiques, luxurious spas, and a pedestrian-only village also call out to you.

Time spent away from home and hearth can be an opportunity to bond and unwind far from the madness of the Christmas season. So, if you’re looking to pamper a partner, yourself, or the entire family, you’ll find Whistler an ideal place for an unforgettable festive holiday.

Beautifully nestled between the spectacular Coast Mountains of British Ccolombia, Ccanada, the snow-covered resort is only 120 km north of Vancouver. The village lies at the base of the forested slopes of the Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains, and freshwater streams and rivers run through the area.

Whisked into Whistler

There are several ways that you can be whisked into the heart of Whistler. Vancouver is the nearest international airport and it’s served by 22 scheduled flights from the US. United, Alaska, and American Airlines all fly into Vancouver. A short 2-hour drive along highway 99, or the Sea to Sky highway, as it is known, will bring you to the resort. Driving conditions in the winter can be tough and snow tires are recommended.

Other travel options include the Whistler Mountaineer train from Vancouver. It’s a spectacular 3-hour journey through canyons
and up steep hills. For another amazing introduction to the dramatic scenery, climb aboard the floatplane service that connects Vancouver to Whistler. Or you can trundle into town under your own steam via a 5-hour drive from Seattle.

Remember to pack your passport if you’re traveling by plane, although you won’t need it if you arrive by land or by water.

White Christmas on the slopes

Don’t just dream of a white Christmas when you can live out your festive fantasies on the fresh, dry powder every day of your stay. There are more than 200 beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs covering over 8,100 skiable acres; simply the best ski parks and pipes in North America.

There’s no need to let gravity get you down if you’re a stranger to a pair of skis, as there are schools for all ages, aptitudes, and experience levels to help you cope with the slopes.

Whistler is a big friend of the family and there are so many activities to keep the kids occupied. Whistler Kids has one of the largest kid ski programs that you’ll find anywhere in the world. They’ll be captivated by the adventure playground on Blackcomb Mountain as it twists its way through an enchanted forest. There’s even a ski-through castle! Family Zones are popular on some slopes, and these green-run areas are clearly signposted. Teenagers aren’t ignored, and there’s a hectic series of special programs for them, too, including nighttime jib sessions.

And if there are children in your party who are too young for the slopes, fully qualified childcare specialists are on hand to keep them entertained.

Much more than mountains

Winter in Whistler does mean skiing, but there is so much more to the place than just hitting the slopes.

Why not take a helicopter ride for a bird’s-eye view of nearby glaciers, a jaw-droppingly beautiful experience as you fly over mountain peaks, waterfalls, and crystal blue lakes.

For a cozier way of seeing the sights, grab a cup of hot chocolate and snuggle up under the blankets with your sweetheart on a moonlight sleigh ride. Or, take the family on a dash through the snow on a one-horse, open sleigh; an exhilarating way of checking out the neighborhood. And then there are the shops, more than two hundred boutiques, clothing retailers, gift shops, specialty stores, and art galleries; all set among pedestrian-friendly walkways. For an extra special souvenir of your time in the mountains, take home some native Indian art or locally made jewelry.

Après-ski activities

When the sun sets and you’ve shaken the snow off your boots, enjoy some of the many other pleasures that Whistler has to offer. The après-ski is impressive. You can soothe your mind, body, and soul in one of the area’s sumptuous spas. The resort is quickly building a reputation as the premier spot for pampering with a dizzying array of treatments. Try an ‘Executive Escape’ for a day full of indulgence, or make your way to the Four Seasons Spa and relax in one of their outdoor tubs. Breathe in the fresh mountain air while your eyes feast on magnificent views.

Of course, your experience in the shops, slopes, and sights is going to make you ravenous. With more than 80 restaurants to choose from, your taste buds will be doing somersaults with excitement. It’s like a United Nations of cuisine, and the creative kitchens of dozens of nationalities are represented here. There’s French, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Greek, and Japanese.

The Bearfoot Bistro is viewed by many as the best in Whistler, and executive chef, Melissa Craig, was recently crowned best chef in Canada for her mix of west coast and international ingredients. The setting is extravagant and opulent, but without the pretension of similar five-star dining establishments; a perfect place for a romantic and cozy evening. After your appetite has been sated, kick back in the champagne bar where a rail of ice will cool and illuminate your champagne flute from below.

For a fantastic family meal, the Old Spaghetti Factory offers great value for your money. They have a three-course kids meal and the family will enjoy the fun and funky setting. It’s worth noting that many restaurants in Whistler have special kids menus—even the most upscale places.

Nightlife to remember

Whistler is named after the piercing shrill of the marmots that live in the surrounding mountains. But don’t worry, the mountain rodents won’t keep you awake at night; you’ll either be far too relaxed or partying too hard to notice. If you can wait until the wee small hours before sleep claims you, try one of the late-night spots. Many bars and clubs are open long into the night. Their open patios play host to live music, all boasting a bubbly and lively atmosphere. You won’t have to work too hard to find your perfect spot.

Dance till you drop at Buffalo Bill’s, or if you’re part of the sophisticated set, slip into a wine bar for a glass or two. The Mallard Bar in the Chateau Whistler is a wonderfully mellow place to enjoy a Martini.

Ski to your front door

From icicle covered chalets to executive slope-side townhouses, there’s a range of accommodations to suit parties large and small. The uberpalatial Fairmont Château Whistler is possibly the swankiest hotel in the resort, with prices to match. A beautiful and majestic pile at the foot of the Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains, it’s the final word in luxury. Being so close to the slopes, guests can enjoy ski-in/ski-out privileges. Families are also welcome.

At Le Chamois Whistler Hotel, there are impressive views of the mountains to be had from the luxury and comfort of one of the suites. Equipped with several bedrooms and a den, they are large enough to accommodate most families. If there is romance on your mind, choose a holiday hideaway that comes with its own hot tub and flickering fire.

Doggie lovers are also catered to, so Fido doesn’t have to miss out on all the festive fun. Whistler is a very dog-friendly place. Your pet pooch will be welcomed at many hotels including the Crystal Lodge, where they’ll even give him or her a special blanket. And when you’re up on the slopes, check Fido into Whistler Dog’s Paw, a doggy daycare center.

Winter wonderland

During the Christmas holidays, Whistler village looks and feels like the sort of place movie directors have in mind when they envisage an idyllic Christmas scene. A white winter blanket cloaks the entire area, children ride in sleighs, the air is alive with the sound of carols, and snow-covered evergreens and buildings glitter and sparkle with their fancy festive lights. A tree-lighting ceremony, village train rides, and dozens of kid’s activities make it a truly magical setting. A haven for the festive holidaymaker, this winter wonderland could be the best present you’ve ever given yourself.
