Create Space for the New and Wonderful
As we said goodbye to 2009 and rang in 2010, it reminded me how natural this cycle is of “out with the old, in with the new.” And how when we remain open to what comes next, the Universe can usher in some very nice and unexpected surprises.
At this time last New Year’s, my family and I spent our first holiday season without my dad, who had passed away earlier that year. I celebrated the New Year remembering my dad and quietly, lovingly saying my goodbyes to his strong, inspiring presence in my life.
This New Year’s, while still bittersweet without dad, was a joyful celebration with my new fiancé Dan and a new chapter in my life. I never dreamed this is where I’d be one year later.
Way back in grade school science class we learned that nature abhors a vacuum. Whenever an empty space appears, something else will move in to fill up that space. Just as this is so in the physical world, it’s true in our emotional and spiritual realities as well.
The New Year is thought of as a time for resolutions, but most people fail at keeping their New Year’s resolutions because in their heart and mind, they have not yet truly let go of the old. It might be an old—and usually incorrect/negative—attitude about a love relationship, or our body or health. Or it could be a subconscious, misguided belief we learned from childhood about money, or our leadership ability that prevents us from becoming the authentic, empowered, successful entrepreneur we know is waiting to emerge ... if we only embrace her and create the space for her to appear.
Sometimes creating space to welcome the new means saying goodbye to someone or something we love or feel comfortable with—such as that seemingly stable job-for-a-regular-paycheck-and-benefits, or our cozy home office we’ve outgrown—but we must be honest with ourselves if it no longer resonates with where and who we are now or desire to become.
In this New Year, remember the old with love and appreciation, but if it no longer suits you and holds you back, then let it go. Create the space for the Universe to surprise you with a new and wonderful something—or someone. It just might be a new YOU!
Love and Success,
