There’s a lot of talk right now about this being a bad time for business. However, those who have owned their own businesses for a while can tell you that any time can become a bad time for business – if you ever find yourself in the unfortunate situation of having lost your enthusiasm. When the spring goes out of your step and you just can’t seem to muster up the energy and spirit required to keep your dream afloat, what can you do to turn the tide? We’ve got nine tips that just might help.

Renew your excitement

1 When you get bogged down in the day-to-day details of running a successful business, it can be all too easy to lose sight of the big picture. Ask yourself the question: Why did I start this business in the first place? What attracted me to this line of work?

If you love animals and your dream was to own a pet boarding business, but you’ve been spending the last month behind a desk sorting papers, it’s not hard to realize why your passion is waning. Take some time to think about why you once risked so much to start your own successful business, and then come back to your work with a new attitude. You’ll be surprised at how much difference some basic introspection can make!

Get employees excited too

2 It’s important for you to be excited about your business in order for it to run successfully, but at the same time this is not enough—your employees must also be excited! If you can get your employees behind you rooting for the business and its values, then you cannot be stopped. To achieve this, encourage dialogues with your employees about where the company is going and what can be done to get there. Make them feel like an active part of company culture and lead by example. A passionate employee makes for a strong business.

Learn to find strengths

3 One of the main reasons for losing your excitement about your business is the feeling that you just don’t have the right people for the job. It can often be the case that when you’ve worked with certain people for a long time, you can begin to take their skills and talents for granted. If you need to embark on a new project in your business or try out some new directions, yet aren’t sure you have the right team to pull off the job… check again. Develop the skills for matching the right employee to the right type of work and you’ll see your results quadruple almost overnight. It’s all about being able to find the hidden strengths in people, bring them to the surface, and make them work for your business.

Reaffirm your business values

4 Most people in business will tell you that you won’t get far without a strategy, and this is indeed good advice. A business without a sound strategy is a business without direction. However, it’s too often the case that some business owners get carried away trying to implement strategic systems in an attempt to emulate the major corporations. Instead of taking this route, why not focus on what makes your personally owned business unique—the fact that it has an underlying set of values and principles that guides its actions at all times? In other words, rather than worry yourself over details and rhetoric, trust in yourself and what you believe in: Create your strategies by looking at what values you want to promote with your business, and go from there.

Attend a convention

5 There are few ways to get more excited about your business than by forming new business relationships. Whether you network with new people to synergistically expand your business, or just find an all-new customer niche you can target, creating new relationships can bring any business (and business owner) out of a slump in seconds flat. With that in mind, why not try attending a convention or seminar in your area? You’ll get out and have a chance to meet new people, as well as renew your passion for your work!

Take a risk

6 Even the most exciting business can become a dull routine if you never change the way you do things. We know it can be scary to break away from a model that has proven successful, but you have to realize something important: It’s largely your own passion for your business, rather than any particular model, that drives its success! In other words, if you get bored with things, you aren’t going to push as hard and your business will suffer. To remedy this, never be afraid to try out new ideas. You don’t have to put everything on the line to take a risk, all you have to do is be willing to try new things. Who knows what potential successes await you?

Invest in yourself as you would your business

7 One reason many business owners grow less than enchanted with their businesses is they forget to take care of themselves because they spend so much time taking care of those businesses. This is overlooking a vital truth, however: In a very real way, you ARE your business! Without you, your business cannot operate the way it should. If you aren’t feeling your best, how can your business be expected to grow and thrive? You must learn to view the investment of time and energy in yourself as worthy as an investment in your business. Ensuring that you eat right, get daily exercise, and get the appropriate amount of sleep will keep you operating in tip-top condition, ready and able to approach your business with the necessary level of passion and commitment each day.

Set aside customer appreciation time

8 If you’re feeling distressed about your business right now, chances are that you’ve been spending too much time looking at the numbers. While the numbers are obviously of vital importance, they make it all too easy to lose sight of a simple truth: At the core of every business lies customer service. Whether you’re selling a product, providing a service, or doing anything else— without a paying customer, your business cannot succeed. When you start thinking of your business in terms of the people you reach out to instead of how many units you sell, it can totally turn things around for you. Set aside some time one day each month to call up some old, valued customers and let them know that you sincerely appreciate their doing business with you. This is a huge spiritual pick-me-up that will do wonders for your level of excitement toward your business.

Look to the future

9 One last thing to keep in mind when trying to renew your enthusiasm toward your business is to learn to look past present obstacles and see what the future holds. If you have a firm strategy in mind that is centered around your personal business values and mission statement, then you simply can’t fail. Every step toward implementing this strategy puts you closer to a future reality when all your dreams are met and everything in your life and business are running smoothly and perfectly. If you can envision this day in total clarity, it will become something of a mantra that can help you through times of stress. Spending a few minutes alone and vividly visualizing the future that awaits you if you succeed can be just what is needed to ensure you have the excitement necessary to make that future a reality.
